Vic: MCG tipped to get heritage listing
The MCG is expected to be granted Victoria's highest level of heritage protection when
the Heritage Council meets today.
If the nomination for inclusion on the Victorian heritage register is successful it
could be a setback for the $400 million redevelopment proposed for the site.
A report in the Age newspaper says Heritage Victoria has supported groups wanting to
save the ground from development recommending the Heritage Council approve the nomination.
Plans for the revamp were unveiled in late December but were opposed by a large group
including the National Trust and members of the Melbourne Cricket Club.
On the same day as the plans were unveiled, the MCC nominated the entire ground - including
the playing surface, the 1928 members pavilion and three grandstands for inclusion on
the state's heritage listing.
Premier STEVE BRACKS has endorsed the redevelopment proposal, telling reporters it
would reaffirm the MCG as arguably the best ground in the world.
